🛠️ My Weirdest Teching Tool (Spoiler: It’s mostly just lazy engineering 😂) 🛠️

Okay, maybe it’s not super weird, but it’s definitely a bit lazy! I never actually got around to taking the axle out of the housing, so what you're looking at is an old AEG motor chucked directly onto the end of a power drill.

Why do I use this monstrosity?

It lets me manually cycle a gearbox slowly from the outside.

⚙️ Listen & Feel: I can check for any weird binding or grinding going on inside the shell before ever hooking up a battery.

👀 Visual Checks: It is absolutely perfect for watching your tappet plate timing in slow motion.

I’m sure @gun_power_tool makes something way neater and more professional, but hey... if it’s stupid and it works, it ain't stupid! 🤷‍♂️

This week's "that ain't right" 😂

Look closely at the photo, this V2 gearbox was properly radiused at the cylinder window to prevent stress cracks, but the front still snapped clean off. Why? 💥

While filing those 90-degree corners into smooth curves helps distribute the impact of the piston, standard cast zinc shells are still just "pot metal." Microscopic internal flaws, combined with the brutal force of a heavy spring, high ROF, or cold weather, will eventually cause metal fatigue.

How to keep this from happening to you:

1️⃣ Upgrade to CNC: For high-stress builds (DMRs/DSGs), a CNC-machined aluminum shell is the only permanent fix.

2️⃣ Check your Sorbo Pad: Cushions wear out! If your padding is flattened, the shell is taking the hit.

3️⃣ Don't Dry Fire if you can help it: Without a BB to create a cushion of air resistance, the piston hits the cylinder head with maximum, brutal force.

Do I need it? No. Do I want it? Yes.

I have a trusty valve key, but they don't last forever and mine started to slip out of valves. So a good (vague) excuse to replace it with a @gun_power_tool one 😍

Not the most exciting photo of this @tokyo_marui Saiga 12K... but something I just fixed after the customer sent it with it not cycling properly and venting mags. After some investigation, found the bolt wasn't travelling far enough enough back to reset the valve knocker. Some more investigation found there's a tiny pin which holds the rocket valve in place... was broken amd meant the gas wasn't routing properly.

That pin isn't easy to find on its own, so made one from scratch and it's back in the field. This shotgun is possibly one of the loudest blowbacks, but fun to use! 😅

My top tip is that if you plan to run on HPA wirh a mag adapter, make sure the stock parts are up to higher pressures first 😉

Is your gearbox a ticking (or screeching) time bomb? 💣

When we pull a gearbox for service, "ovalling" on the bushings is one of the first things we hunt for. It’s a small issue that leads to a critical failure if you ignore the warning signs.

What causes it?

-High lateral force on the gear axles (usually that bevel gear).
-Budget bushings that can't handle the heat.
-Poor shimming.

The Warning Signs:
🔊 Excess rattling or a "screechy" gearbox.
🔎 Visible wear on the bushungs seen outside of the shell.

The bottom line: Bushings are cheap. A total gearbox rebuild isn't. Don't wait for the crunch - get it checked. 🛠️
